How to make your own playdough

playdough21As a preschool teacher I plan and prepare so many different activities for the children in my classroom.  I have come to the conclusion that I really should be sharing more of these ideas on here.  We do many of the same projects at home and I have shared a few of them.  I plan on sharing many more and I hope that many of you will find something fun to do with your own children.

This is a recipe I have used several times at school and home.  I have tried so many different recipes, some you have to cook and others you do not.  I prefer the recipes that do not require cooking, but they all are fun to create with children.

This one is generally known as salt dough.  It is totally edible, although it is not very tasty (very salty).

Salt Dough
Author:
Recipe type: Craft
Serves: N/A
Ingredients
  • 2 Cups of Flour
  • 1 Cup of Salt
  • 1 Cup of Warm Water
  • Optional Food Coloring
Instructions
  1. In a large mixing bowl mix the flour and salt together.
  2. Then slowly mix in the water to make a doughy consistency.
  3. *If you want the dough to be colored mix the food coloring in the water before you mix it into the flour salt mixture.*
  4. Once it mixed use your hands form a ball with your dough, kneed it for at about 5 minutes. The longer you kneed it the smoother it will be.
  5. You can store it in an air tight container and save it for later!
  6. You can also let them air dry and paint your creations!

I have learned that when you want four different colors to make sure you cut the recipe in 1/4ths and color the water for each.  I tried to mix it all together and color just the dough…to save a little time.  It did not work quite as well, the colors were not nearly as bright.  Now we are pros at making our own playdough!  We even made playdough for some friends for their 2nd birthday!

The kids love cooking so this has been a big hit around our house.  Here are a few photos of the fun we had making our own playdough.
