We have a cherry tree in our front yard and since it bloomed this spring we have been discussing how the flowers would turn into cherries. Once the flowers were gone they noticed the cherries starting to grow, so we had another discussion. This time the discussion was about having to wait for them to grow and turn red. They started turning red over the last 2 weeks or so. We told the kids we would go cherry picking when they were all ripe. Tonight we finally had a chance to do just that! They absolutely loved picking cherries all by themselves. While we were picking we talked about what we would do with them. Of course eat them! We decided we wanted to try and make cherry smoothies. We talked about having to pit them and wash them before eating them. They all looked about me when I said we had to pit them. So I showed them the seed in the middle and told them that was the pit. Then the rest of the time they were picking them, bringing them to the bowl, tossing them in, and saying we had to wash them and pit them. I love these moments with my kiddos, it makes our crazy moments worth it!
Here are a few pictures from our adventure, plus a couple when the tree was in bloom.
